Moncler was founded in 1952 by Rene Ramillon and Andre Vincent in Monestier de Clermont, a suburb of Grenoble, France.

The brand name is a coined word combining the letters of " Monestier de Clermont ". Originally, it was a company that made equipment for mountaineers, such as tents, shelters, and clothing. The original form of down wear was born from shellfish that were made to protect factory staff from the cold, and had limbs that could be exposed. Moncler from 2018 MONCLER GENIUS started.
